Goold Family Alaskan Cruise #GooldenAniversary

My parents had their 50th wedding anniversary on June 3 this year.  Earlier in the year they announced to us they were taking all their kids and spouses on an Alaskan Cruise.  I'm not even sure how to describe how fun this cruise was.  It was so fun being all together for 7 uninterrupted days. We stayed busy, yet relaxed.  We took naps whenever we wanted to.  We all got along and there was no drama whatsoever. Not that there ever is, we all get along so well but it was just nice to be away from everything for a week.  So this post will describe everything we did but it's going to be hard to remember all the fun times we had.

We went on the Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas ship.  It was 7 days.  We left from Seattle and stopped in Juneau, Skagway and Victoria, Canada.  But in between that on the ship we had so much fun.  We stayed so busy playing cards, going to shows, going to the piano bar, dancing, watching people doing the surfrider.  We even did miniature gold and ice skated.  Each night we all sat together for dinner and laughed and laughed.  Well we laughed the whole week.  We even had an elevator race one night and my dad danced for us on a balcony one time.  We had the Indian from the 'Village People' come 'dance' (that's the appropriate word I'll leave in this blog) with Lori and a singer tried to get AT to sing 'Hot Damn' with him.  And we can't forget magic tricks at dinner and toasting with fake champagne given to my parents.  I forced myself to read one book and actually finished it although most the time I started to read I ended up falling asleep and napping instead.

Day 1 - Boarding the ship, leaving Seattle

Day 2 - At Sea.  We played cards, napped, read books and saw an ice skating show.  It was Formal night at the Captains Dinner

Day 3 - Juneau.  It was cold and rainy when we got there and then cleared and warmed up a bit by the afternoon.  Everyone except Jennifer and my parents went and saw Mendenhall Glacier and this huge waterfall next to it.  We saw a ton of Bald Eagles just hanging out on light poles like it was no big deal.  After that we ate yummy crepes and went shopping.

Day 4 - Skagway.  Everyone split up this day and so Shane and I decided to do the zipline.  We took a pretty ride up the mountain a ways and spent about 2 hours doing a small ropes course and ziplining. Then we had the hugest and most delicious scone that tasted so yummy.

Day 5 - Our captain took us up Endicott Arm.  This is basically where the captain steers the boat up this narrow passage with land on both sides and then tries to avoid the icebergs floating in the water. And at the end of the passage was another huge glacier.  It was so beautiful.  The water was bright green and there were seals laying on all the ice chunks everywhere.  Alaska is so beautiful but this day was unreal the scenery, water and everything.

Day 6 - Day at Sea.  It started warming up as we moved further south so we were able to get outside a little and enjoy some sun.  Jeff, Doug and Brett all tried the flowrider and did really good.  We went ice skating and miniature golfing where I lost to Jeff by 1 point...dang it.

Day 7 - Victoria, Canada - We didn't really have anything planned for this day.  We just got off the boat and wandered around.  We ended up finding a little boat tour that took us up the Victoria border and back and told us all about Victoria and it's history.  It was actually really interesting I thought. Afterwards I was craving a burger and we found a great burger shop and then walked around Victoria exploring for a couple hours.  It was also our last night with our great waitress and waiter so a group picture was a must.

Day 8 - Sadly our cruise had come to an end.  We got off the ship Friday morning.  We rented a huge 15 passenger van and explored Seattle until our flight that evening.  Everyone explored the market while Shane and I met his friend Paul for lunch.  Then that afternoon we went and saw the Space needle and relaxed until it was time to go to the airport.

I can't thank my parents enough for this amazing trip we had.  It was fun, relaxing and a special week that we all got to be together.  It will be something we all remember for the rest of our lives.  Thanks Mom and Dad!

And a special thanks to Shane's mom who drove out from California to stay with our kids.  She is always so willing to watch them and does a great job where we never worry about them while we're gone at all.
